It is our pleasure to invite you to the International Conference THE BALKANS IN EUROPE - PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE which will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 16-17 May, 2018. Arrangements for this meeting are being handled by the University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski" and its Faculty of History under the auspices of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU .
In the first half of 2018 Bulgaria is chairing the Council of the European Union, to be followed by Austria and Romania. One of the key focuses of the Bulgarian presidency is fostering the integration of the Western Balkans by achieving the individual action plan for each of the countries, with precise outlined steps, but without creating unrealistic expectations. Bulgaria aims at increasing the connectivity between the countries of the region with member states as well as at the creation of a better business milieu for the integration of South East European countries.
Our goal in organizing the conference will be bringing together esteemed scholars, political experts and journalists from the region and EU to discuss the experience amassed in the integration of the Balkans in Europe, the obstacles before the enlargement and the perspectives to this process.
Papers are expected to be on different aspects of the political, economic, cultural and social problems of the integration of the Balkan countries in Europe. We expect failures in the past to be discussed, positive examples to be quoted and possible developments to be put on the floor. Possible themes for papers might be: The EU and the integration processes in SEE; the migration as an European and Balkan problem; the europeanization of the Balkan societies; the Western Balkans as a problem of European security; the economic integration of the Balkans in EU; religious aspects of the integration.
We hope that your contribution to one of these topics in the form of a paper of 15 minutes will help to further understanding of the exciting - and contentious - issues surrounding the integration of the Balkan countries. We shall cover your costs for the conference, including travel expenses /up to 250 Euros/, accommodation and daily allowance.
We will expect the confirmation of your participation with title and brief 100-word abstract for the conference by March, 1st 2018.
